Caffeinated products can be a game-changer for endurance athletes looking for that extra edge.
Whether it’s gels, chews, or drinks, a hit of caffeine can boost focus, delay fatigue, and help you push through those tough late-race kilometres. Everyone's tolerance to caffeine may differ, especially those with a sensitive stomach, so it's best to train and familiarise your limits. A well-timed kick of caffeine helps sharpen mental clarity and improve perceived effort, especially during long runs or races. Unlike a standard energy drink crash, endurance-specific caffeinated products are usually dosed right and paired with carbs for sustained energy. They’re great for breaking through a mid-race slump or powering up a final climb. Just be smart with timing and dosage, everyone’s tolerance is different. If you're chasing a PR or just trying to make it to the finish with a smile, caffeine could be solution.

Caffeinated supplements for training, racing and everyday focus

When used strategically, caffeine supplements can support your training as well as your race day performance. Choose from a range of caffeine gels, caffeine shots, caffeine powders and more to find the right options for you. Pay close attention to the manufacturer's guidelines around dosing and ensure you build tolerance gradually too. You can also stack your caffeine supplements with some additional pre-workout supplements to maximise training readiness and race-day performance.

Caffeine gels and shots for race-day energy

Whether it’s a pre-planned part of your race day fueling strategy or a just-in-case energy boost to have in your pocket, the right caffeine gel or caffeine shot can make all the difference to your race. Fast-acting, portable and easy to consume, they’re a great option to have in your race day kit. To get the most out of your caffeine tablets and products, make sure you test them out in training to ensure gut tolerance.

When it's best to take your caffeine supplements depends on the length of the race as well as your personal tendencies. Some athletes like to take a caffeine shot about 45–60 minutes before the race, while others prefer a hit with about 60–90 minutes left. Some even microdose caffeine supplements every 90 minutes throughout the race, alternating them with energy bars for more solid fuelling. Always check manufacturer labels for advice around dosing. Or, if you’d like some personalised advice, you can ask Ash, our in-house dietitian.
