Are You A Salty Sweater? Here's How To Tell

Stand two athletes side by side after the same hard session in the same conditions, and their sweat won't tell the same story. One finishes with a light sheen and barely a mark on their kit. The other finishes with a shirt crusted in white salt stains and can taste salt on their lips. Same workout, same weather - very different sodium losses.

That second athlete is what's known as a "salty sweater," and it's a genuinely useful thing to know about yourself. You can spot the signs without a lab test - pinning down your exact sodium losses still takes a proper sweat test, but even a rough read on where you sit helps you avoid the two real risks of getting sodium wrong: gut distress from taking in more than you're losing, or dangerous territory like hyponatremia at the other extreme. Here's how to spot it, and what to do about it once you know.

The Tell-Tale Signs You're A Salty Sweater

You won't get an exact number without a proper sweat test, but you don't need one to spot the signs - just some attention after your next few sessions, especially anything over an hour or in the heat ¹.

  1. White or grey marks on your kit or cap - these are crystallised salt, and researchers themselves use this as a marker athletes can self-report to estimate their sodium losses ². Keep in mind, however, that this sign may be absent in humid climates, since sweat doesn't evaporate from the garment as easily, meaning the salt has less opportunity to crystallise.
  2. A gritty or crusty feel on your skin, especially your forehead, arms or back, once you've cooled down.
  3. Sweat that stings your eyes noticeably more than it seems to bother training partners.
  4. A distinctly salty taste on your lips or skin during longer efforts ¹.
  5. Clothing that dries stiff, almost crunchy, rather than just damp.

If a few of these sound familiar, you're very likely losing more sodium per litre than the average athlete. Concentrations vary more than fivefold, from around 17 to 92 mmol/L ². You're probably losing more total fluid too, since the two tend to rise together: faster sweating outpaces sodium reabsorption, so heavier sweat is usually saltier sweat as well³˒⁴.

 

Why Some People Sweat Saltier Than Others

Much of this difference comes down to who you are rather than what you do that day - even accounting for exercise intensity, heat, and diet, most of the variation in sweat sodium concentration between individuals is still unexplained by those factors, pointing to it being largely a fixed, individual trait⁵. Sweat sodium concentration sits on a continuous spectrum rather than in fixed categories, but splitting it into rough thirds using published athlete data gives a useful working guide².

Light sweaters → below roughly 750mg of sodium per litre

Moderate sweaters → roughly 750-1,400mg of sodium per litre

Heavy or salty sweaters → above roughly 1,400mg of sodium per litre, with the saltiest individuals measured reaching over 2,100mg per litre 2

Sweat rate varies just as widely - anywhere from around 0.5L an hour up to 3.5L an hour depending on the person, the heat, humidity, and how hard you're working.¹ That matters because your total sodium loss is a function of both numbers: how salty your sweat is, and how much of it you're producing. A moderate sweater training in extreme heat can lose more total sodium per hour than a genuinely "salty" sweater training somewhere Cool²˒⁴

 

Want An Exact Number Instead Of An Estimate?

The self-check above is a genuinely reliable way to sort yourself into a light, moderate or heavy salty sweater, but it's still an estimate. Whether it's worth upgrading to a proper sweat test depends mostly on two things: how long your event is, and how much you actually drink during it. Research on this specifically suggests testing and precise sodium targeting mainly pays off for events beyond about two hours, where you're also drinking enough to replace a large share - roughly 70% or more - of your fluid losses ⁹. Outside that - shorter sessions, or events where you deliberately under-drink relative to losses - the extra precision has little to add, and salting to taste is a reasonable approach.

How Much Sodium Should You Actually Be Taking In?

One honest caveat before the steps below: no study has actually tested whether matching your sodium intake to your measured or estimated losses improves performance compared to a simpler, fixed approach ¹⁰. The steps here are a physiologically sound way to avoid the two real, evidenced risks - GI distress from taking in too much, and hyponatraemia at the extreme - not a guaranteed performance edge.

Step 1 - Start with the baseline. For prolonged exercise, the widely used ACSM guideline is 300-600mg of sodium per hour ⁷. Use this if you have no clear reason to think you're an unusually light or salty sweater, or if you're not in the longer-event, high-fluid-replacement bracket described above.

Step 2 - For longer efforts, calculate your own number. If you're in that bracket - a long event where you're drinking to replace most of your fluid losses - multiply your sweat rate by your sodium concentration band from earlier in this piece:

Sweat rate × Concentration

= Sodium lost per hour

0.6 L/h × 500mg/L

1.0 L/h × 700mg/L

~700mg

1.5 L/h × 700mg/L

This kind of individual calculation is what the research on sweat testing favours over a second fixed range for "heavy sweaters" or hot conditions, specifically for these longer, high-fluid-replacement scenarios⁹ - though again, it hasn't been shown to beat simpler approaches in a head-to-head performance trial¹⁰

Step 3 - Don't cram it all into one drink. If Step 2 gave you a big number, that's how much sodium you need to replace overall in an hour - not how salty every mouthful has to be.
